1. Is there a specific time frame in which students are required to declare a major in your department? If yes, when?

YES. BEGINNING THE THIRD WEEK OF THE FALL AND SPRING SEMESTERS AND ENDING THE LAST DAY OF INSTRUCTION. STUDENTS CANNOT DECLARE IN THE SUMMER. THEY MUST DECLARE AT LEAST ONE SEMESTER BEFORE GRADUATION, BUT PREFERABLY AS SECOND-SEMESTER SOPHOMORE

2. Does the Undergraduate Adviser (staff) sign the Education Abroad Program academic planning form, or must a faculty adviser (professor) sign?

THE UNDERGRADUATE ADVISING STAFF CAN SIGN THESE FORMS.

3. Should we advise students to make an appointment to have their academic planning form signed in your department? If so, do they need to bring a transcript or any other supplemental materials with them to their appointment?

STUDENTS DON’T NEED AN APPOINTMENT. ALL OF OUR ADVISING IS DONE ON A DROP-IN BASIS MONDAY-THURSDAY 10-4 AND FRIDAY 10-3 IN 101 STEPHENS.

4. What is the maximum amount of major credit given for courses taken during the education abroad program? Is this maximum calculated by number of courses or by units of credit? Please explain.

3 UPPER-DIVISION COURSES CAN COUNT TOWARDS OUR MAJORS AND MINORS. EACH COURSE MUST BE A MINIMUM OF 3 UNITS AND TAKEN FOR A LETTER GRADE. IN ADDITION, STUDENTS CAN APPLY AS MANY LANGUAGE COURSES AND LOWER DIVISION COURSES AS THEY WISH TO THE MAJOR.

5. Are students in your department able to undertake senior honors theses the semester following EAP participation or are there restrictions? Please explain.

YES. STUDENTS CAN WRITE HONORS THESES UPON THEIR RETURN FROM EAP, PROVIDED THAT THEY TOOK OUR HONORS METHODS COURSE (IAS 102 OR IAS 118) BEFORE THEIR DEPARTURE.

6. Does your department calculate EAP grades into the departmental GPA?

NO.

7. Are EAP grades counted towards departmental honors?

NO.

8. If you represent a department which teaches foreign language, does your department award major credit for the courses taken during the Intensive Language Program (ILP) portion of the EAP program? If so, please explain.

WE WILL AWARD MAJOR CREDIT IF THE FOREIGN LANGUAGE INSTRUCTION IS COMPARABLE TO THAT RECEIVED AT CAL. STUDENTS WILL NEED TO TAKE THEIR COURSE INFORMATION TO THE APPROPRIATE LANGUAGE DEPARTMENT TO DETERMINE EQUIVALENCY.

9. Does your department distribute a special information sheet for your majors which includes advice on how to articulate participation with EAP with the major?

YES. ALSO, WE HAVE SIGNATURE PETITION FORMS WHICH STUDENTS USE TO GET FINAL APPROVAL FOR EAP CLASSES.

10. If yes, do you also provide this information on your departmental website? What is the URL?

THE INFORMATION IS NOT (YET) ON OUR WEBSITE. STUDENTS CAN COME TO 101 STEPHENS OR EMAIL US AT IASTP@UCLINK TO REQUEST THIS INFORMATION.

11. Finally, most EAP students are required to officially declare their major before departure. Returning EAP students who attempt to register through Tele-BEARS from abroad need adviser codes to pre-enroll for courses. What is your departmental policy on releasing advisor codes (AC's) to EAP students?

IF A STUDENT IS ELIGIBLE TO DECLARE, WE REQUIRE THAT THEY SUBMIT A DECLARATION PACKET IN EXCHANGE FOR AN ADVISOR CODE. IF A STUDENT IS NOT ELIGIBLE TO DECLARE BUT WILL BE ELIGIBLE THE FOLLOWING SEMESTER, WE WILL RELEASE AN ADVISOR CODE ONE TIME ONLY. WE WILL RELEASE ADVISOR CODES VIA EMAIL FOR STUDENTS ABROAD AFTER FIRST POSITIVELY IDENTIFYING THE STUDENT BY ASKING THE STUDENT FOR THEIR PRE-SELECTED PASSWORD.

OTHER COMMENTS:

WE ENCOURAGE ALL OUR MAJORS TO GO ABROAD, AND ARE WILLING TO WORK WITH STUDENTS ON THEIR UNIQUE SITUATIONS.
