The Berkeley Grant for The Scholar Ship
Eligibility
- Demonstrated financial need
- Graduate or Undergraduate Student in good academic standing (preference given to Undergraduates)
- You must have at least one semester of enrollment left on the Berkeley campus after
completion of The Scholar Ship program.
- U.S. Citizenship or Permanent Residency required. You must also have a passport or travel documents valid for six months after completion of the TSS program.
- Received a conditional offer of admission or been admitted by The Scholar Ship.
Application Requirements
The award is contingent on successful acceptance into The Scholar Ship program. To be considered for The Berkeley Grant for Fall 2008, students must do the following:
- Apply for admission to The Scholar Ship program by March 4, 2008. Students must have received a conditional offer of admission before they can be considered for the Berkeley Grant.
- Fill out the online application for The Berkeley Grant, submit electronically, and print a copy.
- Submit the following materials:
- Submit a letter of recommendation from a teacher, mentor, or counselor that addresses the following:
- Your leadership qualities
- Your intellectual potential
- Your academic achievements.
- Printed copy of the online The Berkeley Grant application.
- Four short essays (2 paragraphs each) that answer the following questions. These essays are in addition to the essay required as part of the TSS application.
- Please explain how your past experiences have prepared you for international study.
- What kind of unique contribution will you be able to bring to The Scholar Ship experience?
- Why is the TSS experience important to your personal and intellectual growth?
- In this age of global interdependence and unprecedented intercultural contact, what are the potential opportunities and pitfalls for increased global social responsibility?

Application Grant Deadlines
All application materials must be submitted together and received in the BPSA Office (160 Stephens Hall) by 4pm on Monday, March 10, 2008 for the Fall Semester voyage. Grant applicants will be notified of their status two weeks after the application deadline.

Please do not submit a grant application for future voyages. Each grant selection cycle is separate and distinct. If you are not selected for a grant for the Fall 2008 voyage, please consider reapplying in the next cycle. The Spring 2009 deadline for the Berkeley Grant will be in September 2008. |
Awarding Criteria
The grants will be awarded based on timely submission of a complete application. Preference will be given to students in good academic standing with demonstrated financial need. Priority will be given to those studying international and area studies or related fields. Recipients must complete a 20-hour service commitment with BPSA after their semester abroad.
