RICHARD
POCOKE
A Description of the East and Some other Countries,
I, Observations on Egypt, London.
1743.Plate VII:
" Tabulam hanc chorographicam, Agri Ditionis/ DE GRAND CAIRO/ Comprehenso

Vicecomiti de Wentworth et Stainborough/ et Baroni de Raby, Newmarch et Oversley/ D.D.D./
R.P., engraving (322 x 354 mm).
Pococke wrote (p.28) "
the city of Grand Cairo has been much magnified as to its extent, and the number of its
inhabitants: it consists of three towns or cities a mile apart, that is old Cairo, Cairo
properly so called, and the port of Bulac". He doubted whether the figure he was
given of 2,000.000 for the population was correct (p.38). North is at the top, the Nile to the
left
The intentions behind
the book were stated as follows: "The publisher of these observations at first had it
only in his thoughts, to give the world the plans he had taken of the Egyptian buildings,
together with some drawings of them, and to add an account and designs of all the
different orders of Egyptian architecture". (p.iii)
