Georg Braun (1541-1622)

GEORG BRAUN (1541-1622), seems to have thought of it as a companion to the Theatrum Orbis Terrarum of Ortelius. Published in 1570, the Theatrum had been the first comprehensive atlas of maps drawn in a uniform style, and the Civitares was put together with Ortelius' advice. A letter from Braun to Ortelius, dated 31 October 1571, implies that the initiative to produce it came from Hogenberg ("Master Frans's Book of Cities", he calls it at one point). 1

FRANS HOGENBERG was an engraver; he had been largely responsible for the maps in Ortelius' Theatrum. The individual sheets that make up the Civitates were intended to be sold separately as well as together in book form.2
