HARTMAN SCHEDEL,
1440-1514.
Schedel was born in 1440 and trained as a doctor. In the
1480s he settled In Nurernberg to practice. He died in 1514. He is
the author of
the
Nuremberg Chronicle. The book an illustrated
history of the world from the Creation to 1493, was financed by Sebald Schreyer and
Sebastian Kammermaister; Schedel was asked to compile the text because of his great
learning.1
The
woodcuts were commissioned from Michael Wolgemut and Wilhelm Pleydenwurff. 1809
illustrations were printed from 645 different blocks, some being used many times. There
are 116 named views of places, of which less than a quarter make any attempt at accuracy.2
