Give a gift for the future of Southeast Asia Studies at Berkeley through the Center for Southeast Asia Studies

The Center for Southeast Asia Studies offers a variety of giving opportunities. Gifts are currently used to support the Center's annual conference, other public lectures, and outreach activities to schools and communities in the Bay Area. Donations may also be earmarked to establish endowed chairs or a distinguished professorship for faculty, to develop a regular lecture series or distinguished scholar program, and to fund scholarships for undergraduate or graduate students.

The Center currently is supported through the funds it receives as a Title VI National Resource Center, through funds provided by the State of California, and through specific donor funds, as follows:

Luce Endowment: The Luce Foundation originally provided a substantial grant to the Center to develop Southeast Asia Studies through faculty enhancement and hiring. A portion of this grant has now been transferred into an endowment fund that provides an important source of support for Center activities, such as conferences and other special events.

Indonesia Fund: This fund commenced from donations given to the Center in memory of the late John H. Holdridge, former Ambassador to Singapore (1975-78) and Indonesia (1983-86). These funds are used specifically for Indonesia-related programs and activities sponsored by the Center.

SEA Fund: This fund is maintained for gifts provided by various donors, and is used specifically for supplementary special events funding, for graduate student support, for library acquisitions, and to help enhance curriculum and material development by the language instructors.

NEW INITATIVE FOR VIETNAMESE STUDIES
UC Berkeley has seen significant growth in recent years in Vietnamese Studies. More than 120 students currently enroll in Vietnamese language courses every year. The university also offers a range of graduate and undergraduate courses on Vietnamese literature, society and history that attract large enrollments. CSEAS sponsorship of Vietnam-related talks and events including film screenings, colloquia, literary readings, and scholarly workshops are also always well attended by students, faculty and the general public.

The increased demand for Vietnamese Studies programs and courses at the university has inspired the Center to launch a fundraising drive to foster new and enhanced initiatives in this field. The goal of this drive is to establish an endowment that will support the continued expansion for Vietnamese Studies at UC Berkeley over the long term. Endowment funds are sought, in particular, for the following specific needs:

  • To hire additional Vietnamese language instructors and expand course offerings in the Vietnamese language;
  • To support the new Journal of Vietnamese Studies that is developing scholarly research on Vietnamese history, culture and society;
  • To expand support for Center programming of Vietnam-related events on campus;
  • To provide research and travel funds for Berkeley graduate students working in the field of Vietnamese Studies.

All of these gifts help us build on scarce resources to ensure that Southeast Asia Studies remains a vibrant part of the academic life at the University of California, Berkeley, and for students to receive a quality education for both the present and future generations.
