Vietnamese Advanced Summer Institute
Eligibility
VASI applicants are expected to have attained the equivalent proficiency in Vietnamese to the level normally acquired after two years of university study before attending VASI.
All applicants must be citizens or permanent residents of the United States and meet at least one of any of the following requirements:
- Be a graduate student, or a junior or senior in an institution of higher education enrolled in a program of study at the time of the 2008 VASI program, or,
- Be a faculty member who teaches modern foreign languages or area studies in an institution of higher education, or,
- Be a teacher in an elementary or secondary school, or,
- Be an experienced education administrator responsible for planning, conducting, or supervising programs in modern foreign languages or area studies at the elementary, secondary, or post-secondary level.
Exceptions to these eligibility requirements are considered on a case-by-case basis by the VASI selection committee. For further information, please contact VASI and explain your specific circumstances and interest in studying advanced Vietnamese.
You are not eligible to apply for VASI if you have participated in a U.S. Department of Education Group Project Advanced Program or Seminar Abroad Program within the past two years or have had a total of four awards already with either the U.S. Department of Education Group Projects Abroad Program or Seminars Abroad Program.
Applicants who are currently unemployed or not enrolled in a program of academic study or who are native speakers are also not eligible.
Applicants should be aware that the VASI participants may not be accompanied by family members, domestic partners, or friends who have not been admitted into the program.
