| open  | Travel Grants for Conferences and Research This fund supports graduate and undergraduate students to help finance travel to conferences and for research in 2008-2009. Each semester awards of $500 - $1,000 will be made to be used towards expenses (to be reimbursed after the event), but in exceptional circumstances, other funds may be available. There are no deadlines, but please apply at least three weeks in advance. |

| open  | The Khyentse Foundation Award for Excellence in Buddhist Studies The Khyentse Foundation Award for Excellence in Buddhist Studies consists of an annual prize of US$1,000 given to a student, or shared by more than one student, chosen by the Group in Buddhist Studies of the University of California at Berkeley, in recognition of distinction and hard work in the field of Buddhist studies. The student(s) may be at any level of study and the award will be based on performance in the primary skills and tools of Buddhist studies, especially expertise in the classical languages of Buddhist traditions. |

| open  | The Sultan Endowment for Arab Studies - Other Scholarly Initiatives The Sultan Program accepts proposals for conferences, workshops, multi-media projects, web-sites, public radio and television projects, and collaborative and public outreach activities related to the Arab world. Proposals may be submitted at any time and will be considered at the discretion of the Sultan Program Committee. The maximum grant in this category is $5,000. |

Limited funds are available to defray the costs of language instruction in Sinhala, Tamil, Pali or Arabic. The instruction must take place in Sri Lanka and be obtained by September 30, 2009. |

The duration of the exchange can vary from 1 to 34 months and selected candidates can receive assistance with travel and insurance costs and a monthly allowance. |

The scholarships are meant for degree students of Finnish language and literature at universities outside Finland. Preference is given to applicants who are working on their Master's thesis. |

Applications may be submitted for long-term research stays of at least 13 and at most 24 months. Researchers of all disciplines may apply to the foundation directly at any time. |
| open  | IEAS Graduate Research Awards for Continuing Students This fellowship provides research support for graduate students whose research goes beyond the boundaries of one country or region. Regions may include China, Japan, Korea, and their neighbors in Northeast Asia, Central Asia, Southeast Asia, or beyond. Students whose work focuses on only a single country should apply to the appropriate IEAS Center. A small number of competitive awards of up to $6,000 (maximum) are available however, most awards will be for less than this amount. Successful applicants should propose a coherent plan of research/study that will result in tangible progress towards their graduate degree. IEAS fellowships are intended to facilitate special research proposals and study plans, and are not intended for general support. Deadline for applying is in the Spring. | open  | Li Ka-shing Foundation Graduate Student Fellowship Program in Modern Chinese History The Institute of East Asian Studies offers 2-3 fellowships for entering graduate students who plan to specialize in modern (17th-20th century) Chinese history. The Li Ka-shing Foundation awards are 2-year fellowships consisting of payment of fees and tuition for two years, academic year stipends of $20,000 and summer stipends of $3,500. Candidates must be entering graduate students pursuing the Ph.D. degree, or the M.A. in cases where department policy requires application for an M.A. prior to admission to the Ph.D. program. Grants up to $400 are awarded to students who are on the offical program of a professional conference or workshop.
