About IAS
IAS is the hub for global and international activity on the Berkeley campus. Its mission is to promote global citizenship by strengthening the University's position as a preeminent international resource. IAS develops and coordinates international research, teaching, and service programs, and also reaches out, through publications and activities, to assist other institutions who wish to bring a global perspective to their work. IAS seeks to deepen understandings of diversity in the world's societies and to encourage the participation of low-income and historically underrepresented groups in global education and study abroad.

Research
IAS is home to nearly 50 interdisciplinary, comparative, and world area research centers, institutes, and programs. These units support both contemporary and historical research on every region of the world, acting as a research catalyst and facilitator for IAS's extraordinary roster of more than 800 affiliated faculty and 900 affiliated graduate students. IAS is host to 7 National Resource Centers covering all the major areas of the world--among the largest number of such centers of any university in the United States. Through close collaboration with the University's many libraries and the University of California Press, IAS institutes and centers work to ensure the wide dissemination of important scholarly publications and other media resources.
Teaching
The IAS teaching program sponsors six bachelor of arts degrees, four minors, and three master's degree programs, drawing on some 300 internationally oriented courses offered each semester. In collaboration with campus departments, IAS supports access to the study of some 80 languages and is home to the Rotary International Peace Fellows Program. IAS also provides resources and professional development for K-12 and community college teachers.
International Exchange
More than 800 Berkeley students annually study abroad in 33 countries through the UC Education Abroad Program, administered by the Berkeley Programs for Study Abroad. Other students take advantage of reciprocal exchange agreements with nearly 130 universities in more than 40 countries.
