In
2000, IAS Publications joined forces with the University of California
Press, the California Digital Library, and internationally oriented
research units on eight UC campuses to establish a new system-wide,
peer-reviewed electronic publications program, the University
of California International and Areas Studies Digital Collection
(UCIAS). Articles, monographs, and edited volumes published in
the Digital Collection are peer-reviewed according to standards
set by an interdisciplinary UCIAS Editorial Board and approved
by the University of California Press. UCIAS makes digital versions
of these works available free of charge to a global network of
scholars and encourages international intellectual exchange and
research collaboration. All materials in the UCIAS Digital Collection
are joint publications of UCIAS and the University of California
Press, which will also publish selected UCIAS volumes in hard
copy.
The
upper level of a two-tiered system, the UCIAS Digital Collection
draws on materials deposited as Working Papers in participating
units throughout the UC system. This non-peer-reviewed material
is lodged in the eScholarship
Repository, a central location for depositing pre-publication
scholarship, provided by the eScholarship initiative of the California
Digital Library. The eScholarship
initiative facilitates scholar-led innovations and supports experiments
in the production and dissemination of scholarly communications.
