Welcome to the IAS Teaching Program at UC Berkeley
The IAS teaching program provides an interdisciplinary approach
to the study of international and global issues. Comprised of
six undergraduate
majors and three graduate
degree programs. IASTP is a unique intellectual domain. It
is committed to undergraduate teaching and is an integral part
of the Division of Undergraduate Interdisciplinary Studies (UGIS)
in the College of Letters Sciences
(L&S).
At the same time, IASTP is housed in International and Area Studies (IAS) , a collection of premier research centers and institutes which tackle cutting-edge issues in global studies and international relations and provide in-depth knowledge of almost every world-region, from Latin America to Africa. The various IAS teaching programs are chaired by distinguished UC Berkeley faculty. Our teachers are rated as some of the best on campus and our highly experienced staff provide advising and student services.
At a historical moment of unprecedented globalization, the IAS teaching program trains students in the skills and knowledge that are fundamental components of global citizenship and practice. IASTP has strategically adopted an interdisciplinary approach to such training, with the belief that no single discipline can prepare students in the depth and breadth necessary for a complex and reflexive understanding of world history and contemporary globalization.
Accordingly, IASTP offers interdisciplinary
core courses in fields such as political economy, development
studies, and peace & conflict studies and
then incorporates courses in many other departments. In
this way, IASTP offers students a rigorous but flexible curriculum
which recognizes that learning takes place both inside
and outside the classroom.
