Description

This page summarizes procedures and details of maintaining a Web Site on the IAS Web Server. For comparison of available Web services see:

Directory Structure

• Public Web Site:
  http:\\www.ias.berkeley.edu\unitname
• Development Web Site:
  http:\\www.ias.berkeley.edu\dev\unitname

Using this file structure allows the two directories to be mirror images of each other. Files within each directory can be linked in exactly the same way. So links will work in both the development site and the production site. Once a file with its links is working correctly in the development site it can be copied to the production site without any further adjustments to the links.

Security

• Access to files/pages in the IAS Unit's Web server space is determined by logon identification and password. When logged on, users only have access to their specific Unit's Web site.

File Sharing

• Units desiring to share editing duties on their Web site can do so by saving their files on their IAS Web Server directory. The directories are accessible by all unit members who have a proper password.

• All data stored on the IAS Web Server is backed up nightly by Berkeley's UC Backup service. In addition to backing up the most recent files, UC Backup also stores up to five versions of each file so that previous copies of files can be restored.
