This year, for the first time in human
history, more than half the earth's population is expected to be living
in urban areas. Join area scholars and educators in a week-long exploration
of cities in world history. What induced ancient populations to urbanize?
How did the rise of cities shape the idea of citizenship? What can a comparative
study of architecture and urban planning teach world historians about
the lives of city dwellers? What influence has urbanization had on the
arts? How will the world cope with the surge in slum dwelling? Where do
we look for idealized visions of the future metropolis?
