Department of Education National Resource Center and Foreign Language and Area Studies Fellowship Funds are Awarded to Eight International and Area Studies Centers.

In summer 2003 seven International and Area Studies centers were awarded three-year Department of Education Title VI grants for the 2003/2005 period. The seven Area Centers are: Center for Latin American Studies, Center for Middle Eastern Studies, Center for South Asia Studies, Center for Southeast Asia Studies in a consortia with UCLA Center for Southeast Studies, the Institute of East Asian Studies, the Institute of European Studies and the Institute for Slavic, East European and Eurasian Studies. The Center for African Studies was awarded Title VI grant money for graduate student language fellowships under the "Foreign Language and Area Studies" program.

The goal of these grants is to significantly contribute to the national interest by increasing the understanding of regions of the world and knowledge of world languages. The programs support education of undergraduate and graduate students who specialize in advanced language and area studies programs or professional school programs.

The Centers provide monetary support for specific campus teaching and research programs by: supporting teaching and research programs:

  • supporting language and non-language area studies courses;
  • awarding Foreign Language and Area Studies grants to graduate students for foreign language training;
  • providing grants for specialized library collections and staff salaries;
  • developing curriculum programs for K-12 teachers through Institutes and online resources;
  • sponsoring lectures and conferences, which address current international and regional issues for the campus community and the general public;
  • bringing visiting scholars and faculty to the campus to teach or to conduct research.

For further information about the various Center programs, check the specific area Center of interest or the International and Area Studies web site.
