"Global" Indian Women & the Cultural Politics of IT India

Wednesday, December 7, 4 pm
Center for South Asia Studies, 20 Stephens Hall

The increased prominence of a new India, which is global and yet distinctively Indian, has captured the imaginations of economists, politicians, and market professionals both in India and abroad. This talk addresses the ways in which this "global Indian" image is marked through gender and class, examining the everyday negotiations of professional IT women in India who embody both the sanctity of national culture and the profitability of the new economy.

This is the last workshop of the semester in a series of informal gatherings of graduate students across disciplines working in or on South Asia. This forum is designed to be an opportunity for cross disciplinary conversation and support of emerging area studies scholarship. If you are interested in presenting something you are working on, please contact the coordinator of the series, Lucinda Ramberg at lucia@berkeley.edu.
